Professional Services

I offer professional editing, proofreading, localisation and translation. These services sometimes overlap, so here is a brief outline of what is involved:

Proofreading

This is a final check to make sure the document is as good as it can be. Minor errors can be hugely off-putting to readers and may prevent people from engaging with writing that you have worked hard on. As a proofreader, I check the final document for typos, grammatical errors, typesetting issues and consistency, as well as anything you want me to look out for. This can be particularly useful when a document has been authored by several different people, all of whom may make slightly different choices when it comes to grammar and style – but errors can be introduced at any stage of working on a document, and are often surprisingly hard to spot.

Localisation

You need to ensure that a document has local relevance – particularly if it was written by someone who is not resident in the country in which the document is published.

Editing

You have a draft of a document and you would like someone to go through and rework it, sometimes extensively, to ensure that it communicates your message as clearly and attractively as possible. There are various forms of editing: copyediting aims to make your words really sing, whereas substantial editing or rewriting (also known as developmental editing) refers to more substantial rewrites, often focusing on big picture elements such as the shape and structure of the text or story. If you’re not sure which category your project falls into, you’re welcome to ask me.
